Tinsel Anyone?
”One of the most glorious messes in the world is the mess created in the living room on Christmas Day. Don’t lean it up too quickly.” ~ Andy Rooney
It's that time of year where you drag box loads of decorations out and create a huge mess throughout the house as you put up all your fa-la-la-la to make the season cheery and bright. Remember the tinsel? What a mess!!
As we haul our boxes out of the basement or garage, we seem to forget that we need to put it all away in January. So much work! My sister-in-law decorates at least 4 Christmas trees each year, one for each main room in her house. Her home is amazing. So festive!
My sister does a fantastic job of decorating her home until the joy of the season spills out from every window. Plus, she always hosts for Christmas Eve. I don't know how she does it all!
Me, well, I decorate a bit. I have a cute white picket fence around the yard, and I hang a wreath on each fence post and string lights along the fence's length. I'm not big on all the frou-frou, pine boughs, fake snow, etc. But here are my two favorite traditions for the holidays:
Every year, starting the year my son was born, I create 10 or more picture frame ornaments. I pick out my favorite pictures from that year, mostly involving my son, and put them in the little frames. My son is 20 now, and I have over 200 picture frames. If I hung them all on the tree, it would fall through the floor into the basement from the weight! It brings me such joy to pull out the boxes of frames and reminisce. Sometimes I cry; most often, I laugh as I take my walk back through time.
My second favorite holiday tradition involves an Advent Christmas tree where you put on a little ornament each day as you count down days until Christmas. When my son was young, he loved putting the little ornament on each day. Nowadays, he could care less, but I still get a huge thrill out of opening the small door and pulling out the decoration and hanging it on the tree. So silly but hugely satisfying to me.
As you know, I'm a Soul's Calling Coach, and helping others find purpose in life is what lights my soul on fire. So how is decorating for Christmas and looking for your purpose similar? We all have individual styles when it comes to decorating for the holidays, and we all have unique gifts and talents that shape our purpose in life. It's our individuality that gives what we do that special little something.
As you drag out the boxes of ornaments, untangle the lights, and hang the mistletoe, readying your home for the holiday season, take notice of your individuality. See how you express yourself in your home, and then take a moment to recognize your uniqueness, embracing who you are. You are special—one of a kind.
I hope these next couple of weeks that lead up to Christmas shine a light on what makes you, you!
