"If your dominant intent is to feel joy while you are doing the work, your triad of intentions—freedom, growth, and joy—will come quickly and easily into alignment. See your "career" as one of creating a joyful life experience. You are not a creator of things or a regurgitator of what someone else has created or a gatherer of stuff. You are a creator, and the subject of your creation is your joyful life experience. That is your mission. That is your quest. That is why you are here."

Our Love

Esther (Abraham and Jerry)

As I look out my window on this cold day (3 degrees) in February, the Polar Vortex is working its way across the US. Any thought of a "career as a joyful life experience" must include sunshine and balmy weather for me.

I have a preliminary job interview with a recruiter for a position in Chicago later today. As the snow falls quickly outside, piling up against the fence, I am very doubtful that Chicago is the place for me. (Que the music for Green Acres.)

In fact, the more I interview, the farther I seem to get from having a "career as a joyful life experience." In fact, I have submitted more than 100 resumes since November for joyful life experiences. I stopped counting last week. What's the point. It's all digital and lightning-fast these days.

Years ago, in 1983, as I was looking for a job, I would say a little prayer when I mailed a resume written on my special resume paper. "Lord, if this is the job for me, let it happen; if not, block it." Into the mail slot, it would go. It was a sort of ritual and gave me comfort and the illusion that I had some kind of control over the whole process.

Nowadays, you can apply for multiple jobs an hour as you quickly edit your cover letter (if the company even accepts a cover letter) and personalize it for the job you are applying for. It's exhausting. I'm sure it's even more exhausting to be on the receiving end of the process.

This week, I realized that I've strayed from the intentions of joy, freedom, and growth as I look for work. I know I won't find it in the cold northern climes. I need to clarify where I want to be and what I want to be doing. It's so easy to muddy the waters.

So here's my question to you: If pay was based on how much you loved your work, what would you be doing? The more you love it, the more you get paid.

I intend to do a deep dive on this question this week.

Joy + Freedom + Growth = A Career in a Joyful Life
